14 days · Namibia

The Grand Loop, day by day.

14 days · about 3,300 km of driving · self-drive or privately guided · Windhoek to Windhoek

The Grand Loop is the whole country in one journey: the red Kalahari and the Fish River Canyon in the south, the ghost town of Kolmanskop, then the classic northern circuit of dunes, coast, Damaraland and Etosha, finishing on the Waterberg Plateau. It matches the shape of the two-week Namibia trips travellers research most, with one difference: the driving days are honest.

Fourteen days is the minimum this circuit deserves. Below is the route day by day, with real distances and real times, gravel included. As with all our itineraries, it is a starting point designed around your dates, your pace and your interests.

Questions

Before you ask.

Is 14 days enough for the whole Grand Loop?

Yes. Fourteen days is the honest minimum for the full circuit, south and north, without a day that ends in a rush. The one long day is Lüderitz to Sesriem, planned as a full driving day with nothing else promised.

How much driving is there in total?

About 3,300 km. Most days run 3.5 to 6 hours; the longest, Lüderitz to Sesriem, is 6.5 to 8 hours depending on the route chosen. Two full days involve no driving at all.

Should I drive the Grand Loop myself or take a guide?

Both work. Self-drive gives you the country at your own pace and costs less; a private guide removes the navigational load on the long southern legs and adds a spotter's eyes in Etosha. Many travellers mix the two.

When should I book the Grand Loop?

For travel between June and October, nine to twelve months ahead secures the best choice, particularly inside Etosha and near the Sesriem gate. The trip is being decided a season ahead, every year.
